Race Report Cork 2026

This is the race report for Cork Marathon 2026. It was a fun one. I did not believe I would last this long following the 3:45 pacers.

Timeline

The marathon was on the 31st of May, followed by the June bank holiday (definitely needed).

km5

All good. The city was alive and cheering. The route was familiar from my last Cork Marathon in 2024. Pressure to pee was building up, but at the same time the anxiety of losing the pacers was real.

target 5:20/km

km~8

I found a pacer going for a pee, so I followed suit. Around the same time I ran into Clare from LSA and had a brief chat β€” at that moment it seemed the pacers were going much faster than required.

km10–15

Tunnel, some hills, and motorists honking to show support (which was particularly fun). The pacers were great; I learnt some Irish (I am guessing) equivalents of three cheers. The pacer introduced us to someone running their (some ridiculous number, more than 800th) marathon at the age of 69+.

km16–21

This was again the same route as last time β€” we were near Cobh, running along the coast. By this time I had developed a lingering pain on top of my left foot, but it was still manageable, and the light rain was a welcome feeling. In my last marathon here I was already half dead by this point, so it was a great feeling. I tried to get a good picture for myself when running through Blackrock Castle, but they did not take any photographs 😒

km21–28

This was the mentally tough part. This part of the route was changed, and the amount of turns was insane. Every turn was a mental battle with what would come after it. Running straight is mentally easy, but turns kill concentration and left me dreading about what's behind the next corner.

km28–34

It was surprisingly pleasant. Some pains from earlier in the race went away. I caught a glimpse of Alan from LSA walking around the 32 km mark. There are a few more hills in this section.

km34

The WAAAAAAALL. I hit the wall at this point. It was right before the start of a hill. I lost the pacers and started walking. Post-race I checked: I was around 40 seconds slower per km.

+40 s/km

km34–40

It was some walk and some run. I was slowly gaining some pace back using sheer willpower. Around the 38 km mark, a kind gentleman gave me some caffeinated water. I think that helped me a lot. Also saw Joe from LSA cheering on the sidewalk (surprisingly, I missed multiple other LSA supporters).

km42.2

41 km to the finish: I had a surge of energy β€” a familiar ending, similar to the last marathon in 2024. I gained back 20 seconds of my per-km pace.

Race Nutrition

In-race nutrition was all over the place β€” here is the full menu.

Stage Fuel Verdict
πŸŒ… Pre-race πŸ₯£ 2 packets of Flahavan’s Quick Oats Pot – Original Β· 🍎 an apple Β· β˜• instant coffee βœ… No complaints
πŸƒ In-race 🍬 Sugar-coated jelly candies every 5–8 km, a lot more in the later half β€” enough to be disgusted to eat more Β· πŸ’§ caffeinated water from a kind stranger at 38 km Β· 🚫 no gels, they do not go well with my tummy ⚠️ Candies melted in my pockets β€” pack them in plastic next time
🏁 Post-race πŸ₯™ Lunch at Iz Cafe β€” IMO, the best Middle Eastern food in Ireland 🌟 Highly recommended
